| Abstract |
Now ready for combat, the Legionnaires were shipped by boat to Port Said, Egypt, and then on to Ismailia, where they engaged in war maneuvers. In the summer of 1918 they marched through the desert to the Palestine front, to join the Allied forces commanded by British General Edmund Allenby. Known originally as the Eastern Legion (Légion d'Orient), the force initially encompassed Syrian as well as Armenian volunteers.
