Abstract In late 1916 and 1917, the Armenian National Union, established and supported by major Armenian organizations, recruited about 1,200 volunteers from the United States to join the Legion. (Additional recruiting took place throughout the diaspora, bringing the total to 4,000 Armenian volunteers in the Legion.) Recruits received initial training in Paterson, New Jersey, and in August 1917, they embarked for France from New York City (pictured). These Armenian volunteers are shown just before their embarkment; the sign (in Armenian) reads: "Liberty or Death." Image courtesy of Hoover Institution Archives, Shishmanian Collection.
